Overview
Coronary angiography is a catheter-based test that shows whether the arteries supplying the heart are narrowed or blocked. If a significant blockage is found, angioplasty may be done to open the artery. At Agrim Hospital these procedures are supported by the Cath Lab, the advanced ICU and the 24x7 emergency team.
Preparation
Your doctor will review your symptoms, ECG and blood tests and explain the procedure, its benefits and risks. You may be asked to fast for some hours and to adjust certain medicines. Tell the team about allergies, kidney problems and all the medicines you take.
What happens
A thin tube (catheter) is passed through an artery, usually in the wrist or groin, up to the heart. A contrast dye is injected and X-ray images are taken to show the arteries. If needed, a balloon and stent may be used to open a blocked artery. The team monitors you throughout.
Recovery
Most patients are observed in the hospital for a period after the procedure. Your doctor will advise on medicines, activity, wound care and follow-up. Contact the hospital or come to the emergency department if you have chest pain, bleeding or swelling at the puncture site.
