Overview
A permanent pacemaker is a small device placed under the skin of the chest to help the heart beat at a safe rate when it beats too slowly or irregularly. Specialist-supported implantation and monitored recovery are available at Agrim Hospital.
Preparation
Your doctor will assess your heart rhythm with an ECG and other tests and explain why a pacemaker is advised, along with the benefits and risks. Follow the fasting and medicine instructions you are given.
What happens
The device is placed under the skin near the collarbone under local anaesthesia, and thin wires (leads) are guided through a vein to the heart. The device is tested and programmed before you leave the procedure area.
Recovery
You will be monitored after the procedure and given instructions on arm movement, wound care and follow-up checks of the device. Report fever, redness, swelling, fainting or a slow pulse to your doctor promptly.
